Athol
Athol is a small country town that lies on the Southern Scenic Route. In the early 1990s, Department of Conservation and locals installed a length of dry stone walling in the township. The wall was built to highlight a technique used by goldminers and farmers who called Athol home in earlier years. In Athol, these walls were mainly built by miners to support water races and for small buildings. Nowadays, farming is thriving in the area, and the area has become a popular fishing spot as the nearby Mataura River is great for brown trout fishing. Athol is a popular resting stop for cyclists riding the trail. Two purpose-built bridges for cyclists and walkers of the trail have been nicknamed the “Golden Gates,” a stop here is a definite must. For a bite to eat, head over to the Athol Shop, and while you’re here, cross the road and pay the Art Gallery a visit.
